Choosing to become a Medical Transcriptionist can be a lucrative career choice. The job market carries several
employment options for transcribing medical information. Private physicians, hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes
are a few of the employers that hire medical transcriptionists. Opportunities also exist to work from home on a
contractual basis.
A medical transcriptionist requires the proper training in the areas of medical terminology, anatomy,
transcription, and physiology. A basic knowledge about pharmaceuticals, such as, the names of drugs and their
proper spelling, will be helpful too. Medical transcription training can be obtained by enrollment in a community
college, a business school, or in an online training course. Most community colleges and business schools offer a
certificate, or an Associate's Degree, in medical transcription. The cost of enrollment varies, and depends on the
curriculum. Community colleges and business schools will often require additional courses that are outside of the
realm of medical transcription.
In order to satisfy the requirements for an Associate's Degree or a certificate, the additional courses must be
completed. Enrollment periods for one year or two years is common for courses that are offered by a community
college or a business school. However, employment as a medical transcriptionist does not require an Associate's
Degree or a certificate. Online courses are offered by medical transcription training schools. Several options
available for online training, but some schools may not be considered as reputable with the Association of
Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). Visit the website for AHDI.
Research the schools that are listed. Choose a school that offers an online medical transcription training
course that is approved by AHDI. Online courses are self paced, inexpensive, and offer the convenience of in-home
study. Success will depend on individual commitment to completing the course. Also, check with potential employers
to determine if they have partnered with any schools for employee training. Employers, who have partnered with
schools, will often wave the experience requirements that are needed for employment.
Successful completion of course requirements, whether online, at a community college, or at a business school,
may not be enough in order to gain employment. Employers will usually require proof of medical transcription
knowledge, skills, and ability. Testing is an avenue in which medical transcription knowledge and ability can be
proven to potential employers. AHDI offers a voluntary, certification exam in order to become a Certified Medical
Transcriptionist (CMT). Certification from AHDI can be significant to enhance competitiveness and to improve the
chances for employment.
A career in medical transcription is a good choice. Employment is steady, pay rates are competitive, and
opportunities exist for career growth. In-home employment opportunities are also available options. And most
importantly, the career is a well respected profession.
